Restaurants, Golf Courses and other attractions on the Hibiscus Coast

The Hibiscus Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is a holiday playground with something to offer everyone no matter what their interest. From lazing on the sun drenched beaches, abseiling down Oribi Gorge to a round of golf at one of the many fine courses, there is something for you.

Beaches

No matter whether you are looking to join the crowds and enjoy the beach entertainment or find a secluded cove and watch the wave there is a beach on the Hibiscus Coast for you. All of the protected swimming beaches have lifeguards on duty every day to ensure your safety.

Each of the beaches has its own unique attractions. Uvongo's most striking feature is the 23 metre high waterfall formed where the Vungu River spills into a coastal lagoon.

Margate has a magnificent swimming beach, fishing piers and plenty of beach entertainment during the holiday seasons.

Ramsgate's main beach of sheltered sands and tree shaded barbeque sites is beside the lagoon with its paddle boats.

In Southbroom there are bathing beaches at the mouths of the two rivers while the shore between them is a string of small, rocky bays set against the unspoilt dunes.

Golf Courses

It is no surprise that the area is often called the Golf Coast. There are a number of South Africa's top golf courses situated within a 30 minute drive from Driver's Deck with Southbroom Golf Course on your doorstep.

Wild Coast Golf ClubFor a game that will really put your skills to the test, you've got to play the Wild Coast Golf Course, rated as one of the best courses in Southern Africa. With 59 large bunkers guarding manicured lawns, the hole layouts and scenery border on the fantastic. What's more, when the coast breeze gets up, so does your score!

San Lameer Country Club adds a new and exciting dimension to South Africa's "golf coast". The emphasis here is on landscaping and conservation. Birdlife abounds - over 200 species have been noted and the grasslands and wooded areas provide a perfect habitat for a variety of Fauna and Flora. Visitors are encouraged to report sightings of buck and antelope, the Woolly Necked Stork and other birds of significant conservation value.

The course at Southbroom Golf Club has a tough and tight layout through lush coastal bush and offers spectacular sea and surf views from some tees. Dennis Hutchinson, veteran pro golfer and now a TV sport's commentator describes Southbroom as "one of the finest holiday golf courses to be found - anywhere".

Margate Country Club

Margate Country Club is attracting an increasing number of golfers both local and overseas visitors and is perhaps one of the more forgiving of the wayward drive than many of the other courses. Although only 3km from the sea it is located on relatively high ground and abounds with tall trees and excellent inland views.

Selborne today is an exclusive 18-hole golf course estate complemented by a modern country club house for golfers. Bird life abounds here. The course is built on a magnificent site and is described by the developers as "somewhere between Gleneagles and Augusta". Huge indigenous trees flank the fairways and water comes into play on most of the holes. It achieves a good balance between a fun round for the average player and a challenge for the low handicapper.

Restaurants

After a hectic day's activities there are a number of fine restaurants within easy reach of Driver's Deck where you can refuel ready for the next day. Whether it is seafood or steak you are looking for, the Hibiscus Coast can provide it.

Other Activities

Aside from the beaches and playing golf there are a host of other activities on the Hibiscus Coast. For the more adventurous you can try abseiling or the gorge swing at Oribi Gorge Hotel or Scuba Diving. The crocodile farm with its art gallery and restaurant are just a short drive away from Driver's Deck at the entrance to Southbroom. For those that prefer the lure of the mall, Shelly Centre is about 15 minutes away by car.
